Blood Elf Prot Pally

This guide is a joint effort between Sanctum of Light and our friends at My Wow Legion based on years of playing a Paladin, theorycrafting, personal World Of Warcraft Legion Beta experiences, and online research from multiple sources.  Please enjoy it and feel free to ask any questions or tell us how you agree or disagree with our suggestions.  This guide is a work in progress and additional information about the Artifact weapon will be added as we approach the World Of Warcraft: Legion release date.

Protection paladins are the virtuous defenders of the weak,  and warriors of the Holy Light.  Paladins  act with honor, help those in need, and punish those who harm or threaten innocents.  They are powerful, and strong fighters who attract enemies via taunts and attacks to be the focus of enemy attacks and then proceed to use their shield and weapon to block, parry and avoid as many of the hits as possible.  They also rely on having a lots of stamina and using self heals to survive the onslaught as they and their allies dispatch the attacking enemies.

  • We get a new self heal called Light of the Protector.  It is an instant cast, of the Global Cooldown and has a 15 second cooldown.
  • Holy Power and Resolve have been removed.
  • Seals, Righteous Fury, Crusader Strike, Hammer of Wrath, Bastion of Glory, Word of Glory, and Divine Protection have all been removed.

For higher DPS, our priority will be Haste > Critical Strike>Mastery>Versatility>Stamina.

For higher Survivability, our priority will be Stamina>=Versatility>Haste>Mastery>Critical Strike.

Versatility decreases all damage taken as well as increasing all healing and damage done.  As such, it is greatly aids in survivability.   However, we must also have a big enough health pool, so stamina is more important, up to a minimum.  This degree will vary greatly based on many variables, including healers in raid, playstyle, specific encounter, etc. As such, each player will have a different level of comfort and it is highly recommended that each players gets a feel for what their personal balance between Stamina and versatility will be.

Level 15:

Talents 15

  • Holy Shield Icon Holy Shield increases your block chance by 10%, allows you to block spells, and causes your successful blocks to deal Holy damage to your attacker.
  • Blessed Hammer Icon Blessed Hammer replaces Hammer of the Righteous Icon Hammer of the Righteous. It has 3 charges (up from Hammer of the Righteous’ 2), and the hammer can hit all targets it comes in contact with on its path. Enemies that are hit take Holy damage and deal 15% less damage to you on their next auto attack.
  • Consecrated Hammer Icon Consecrated Hammer removes the recharge time of Hammer of the Righteous Icon Hammer of the Righteous. Additionally, the talent always causes Hammer of the Righteous, Shield of the Righteous Icon Shield of the Righteous, and Light of the Protector Icon Light of the Protector to always gain the benefit of you standing in Consecration Icon Consecration (regardless of whether you are or are not).

The strongest talent in this tier to avoid damage is definitely Blessed Hammer Icon Blessed Hammer.  However, it is a bit clunky to use given the hammers spinning around you and trying to get enemies hit by them.  I really like the simplicity of Consecrated Hammer Icon Consecrated Hammer and the fact that it allows us to use Consecration freely without having to worry whether we need it later defensively.  At least initially while all the changes make sense, I will stick be choosing Consecrated Hammer Icon Consecrated Hammer, I might change my choice at a later date.

Level 30:

Talents 30

The strongest survivability this tier is Bastion of Light Icon Bastion of Light, since it allows much more frequent use of Shield of the Righteous Icon Shield of the Righteous.  That being said, while questing and even 5 man content, I prefer Crusader's Judgment Icon Crusader’s Judgment due to the increased DPS and increased uptime of an AoE ability.

Level 45:

Talents 45

  • Fist of Justice Icon Fist of Justice reduces the remaining cooldown of Hammer of Justice Icon Hammer of Justice by 10 seconds.
  • Repentance Icon Repentance is an active ability with a 15-second cooldown. It is a form of crowd-control that incapacitates the target for up to 1 minute, dealing 25% of their health in damage over that period of time. Damage done will break the effect (and stop the damage over time). Repentance can only be used against Demons, Dragonkin, Giants, Humanoids, and Undead.
  • Blinding Light Icon Blinding Light is an active ability with a 90-second cooldown. It disorients all enemies within a 10-yard radius around you, also damaging them. Non-holy damage done to them will break the disorient effect.

Blinding Light Icon Blinding Light light is my favorite talent this tier.  The damage it does, plus the AoE CC make it a very powerful choice. Repentance Icon Repentance is also a good choice, but it only affects one target and feels much more as a DPS CC talent than a tank CC that will help general aggro and damage avoidance.

Level 60:

Talents 60

  • Blessing of Spellwarding Icon Blessing of Spellwarding replaces Blessing of Protection Icon Blessing of Protection. It has a 3-minute cooldown (down from 5), and it protects against all magical attacks, instead of against Physical damage. Otherwise, it functions exactly like Blessing of Protection, but since you can still receive physical damage while it is active, it does not prevent you from tanking a mob with it active.
  • Blessing of Salvation Icon Blessing of Salvation is an active ability with a 1-minute cooldown. It places a 10-second buff on a target, removing all their threat for the duration, and causing all threat they generate during the 10 seconds to be transferred to you instead.
  • Retribution Aura Icon Retribution Aura is an aura that is applied to all party or raid members within 60 yards. Whenever a non-tank ally affected by Retribution Aura receive a melee attack, the attacker takes a small amount of Holy damage.

Blessing of Spellwarding Icon Blessing of Spellwarding is a useful, situational spell when a boss does high magical damage.  Because you lose Blessing of Protection, it might not be always the best idea to use this talent.  Blessing of Salvation has similar effects as it always has, and allows you to take aggro back if you lose it or if a new span aggros on a different player.

Level 75:

Talents 75.

  • Hand of the Protector Icon Hand of the Protector replaces Light of the Protector Icon Light of the Protector. Its cooldown is 10 seconds (down from Light of the Protector’s 15 seconds), and it can be used on any friendly target, not just yourself. It heals for the same amount (25% of missing health) and also benefits from standing in Consecration Icon Consecration.
  • Knight Templar Icon Knight Templar reduces the cooldown of Divine Steed Icon Divine Steed by 50%, and reduces all damage you take by 20% while you are mounted on your Divine Steed.
  • Final Stand Icon Final Stand causes your Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield to also force all targets within 15 yards to attack you for its 8-second duration.

I use Knight Templar Icon Knight Templar in most situations due to the increase in mobility.  However, it is also VERY useful to be able to take no damage while having aggro on all targets around you, so Final Stand Icon Final Stand  is a great choice as well.

Level 90:

Talents 90

  • Aegis of Light Icon Aegis of Light is an active ability with a 5-minute cooldown. It is a channeled ability that, for 6 seconds, reduces the damage you and any allies located within a 10-yard radius behind you take by 20%.
  • Judgment of Light Icon Judgment of Light causes Judgment Icon Judgment to apply a debuff with 40 charges to the target, called Judgment of Light. When the target is attacked, the attacker is healed and one charge is consumed. Each attack can only benefit from the healing once per second.
  • Consecrated Ground Icon Consecrated Ground causes up to 6 allies who stand within your Consecration Icon Consecration to be healed every second, and also reduces the movement speed of enemies in your Consecration by 50%.

My personal favorite this tier is by far Judgment of Light Icon Judgment of Light.  Healing yourself and the whole raid on every attack is a very nice ability, and unlike the other two talents, is not based on ally location, or has limits to the number of players that get healed.

Level 100:

Talents 100

  • Righteous Protector Icon Righteous Protector causes your Shield of the Righteous Icon Shield of the Righteous casts to reduce the remaining cooldown of Light of the Protector Icon Light of the Protector and Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath by 3 seconds.
  • Seraphim Icon Seraphim is an active ability with a 30-second cooldown. It increases your Haste, Critical Strike, Mastery, and Versatility by 4881, and it lasts 8 seconds per charge of Shield of the Righteous Icon Shield of the Righteous available when using it, consuming the charges in the process. It can consume up to 2 charges.
  • Last Defender Icon Last Defender causes you to take 3% reduced damage and deal 3% increased damage for each enemy within an 8-yard radius around you. The effect has diminishing returns, however.

Last Defender Icon Last Defender is a good choice against multiple (more than three) targets.  However, for most boss fights, this will not be very useful.  Seraphim Icon Seraphim consumes charges of Shield of the Righteous Icon Shield of the Righteous, and I don’t feel it is a worthwhile trade off, particularly with the other talents available in the same tier.  While I am not a fan of our weak new Light of the Protector Icon Light of the Protector, I do enjoy the increased availability of Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath, so Righteous Protector Icon Righteous Protector is my choice here.

For multiple targets:

  1. Prioritize Avenger's Shield Icon Avenger’s Shield.
  2. Followed by Consecration Icon Consecration.
  3. Use Shield of the Righteous Icon Shield of the Righteous as needed to maintain your buff.
  4. Judgment Icon Judgment.
  5. If health is not full and it is not on CD, use Light of the Protector Icon Light of the Protector
  6. If you chose Consecrated Hammer Icon Consecrated Hammer, use Hammer of the Righteous Icon Hammer of the Righteous as a filler when all other abilities are unavailable.

For Single Targets:

  1. Prioritize Judgment Icon Judgment.
  2. Followed by Consecration Icon Consecration.
  3. Use Shield of the Righteous Icon Shield of the Righteous as needed to maintain your buff.
  4. Avenger's Shield Icon Avenger’s Shield.

Note: If you chose Blessed Hammer Icon Blessed Hammeryou cannot use Consecrated Hammer as a filler.  Instead, use Blessed Hammer in between every other ability.  That would have it at almost 100% uptime.  Also, you can use  Light of the Protector Icon Light of the Protector as needed and available if health is a concern.

Upon obtaining Truthguard, Protection Paladins gain  Eye of Tyr, which releases a blinding flash from Truthguard, causing (300% of Attack power) Holy damage to all nearby enemies and reducing all damage they deal to you by 25% for 9 sec.

We will have more details in this section when we’re getting closer to the launch of Legion and are able to get our artifacts.

Playing video game since childhood. Started World of Warcraft in 2006, right before The Burning Crusade launched and was immediately hooked. Initially played a demo Warlock until the first raids in Cataclysm, when I switched to my Holy Paladin.

Currently playing the Legion Beta, favorite class is the Demon Hunter, yet still feel strong ties to the Holy Paladin.
